Golden Apple Pinwheels

My mother compiled recipes and put together a cookbook for our ward back when we lived in Washington state, and while I don't particularly remember ever having this dessert as a child, the recipe immediately caught my eye, and I knew I just had to try it.

It is basically like an apple cinnamon roll with a creamy vanilla sauce.

Seriously, how can you pass that up??

Golden Apple Pinwheels

Ingredients:

Dough:

2 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
1/3 c. brown sugar

Filling:

2 c. apples (peeled and chopped)
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Vanilla Sauce

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425.

Mix flour, baking powder and salt until combined.  Cut in shortening until crumbly.  Add milk and stir with a fork to moisten.

Knead on a floured surface 5-6 times.  Roll into a 12"x18" recatangle.

In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, apples, walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg together.  Spread the mixture over the rolled out dough.

Roll up like cinnamon roll dough, cut into 2" wide rolls and place in a greased 9x9 pan.

Bake 10-12 minutes, and pour half of the Vanilla Sauce over the pinwheels.

Bake an additional 10-12 minutes or until just turning golden.

Serve warm, topped with remaining sauce.

Enjoy!
